Reflection Blog 6

Throughout week eight of taking the course digital media production I learned many things I did not know about video production. I also learned a lot of things I did not know about cameras. Something useful I learned is that journalism students and creative media production students can check out video cameras from the SMJ Equipment room. I also learned there are two types of video cameras available for check out: Canon XA15 and Canon XA30s. I had no previous knowledge about video or film making so I also learned a lot of terminology from this course pertaining to camera movements. A pan is a side to side movement. Tilts, contrary to the name, is a camera movement that goes up and down vertically. There are also a ton of names for types of shots that I didn’t have knowledge of before such as close up, medium close-up, medium, wide, and extra wide. I also learned about B-roll. B-roll is filler shots of whatever it is that your video is about that helps you fill in your video. I find it very interesting that you can never have too much b-roll but it makes sense and is a good rule of thumb. I also learned about lavalier mics. Lavalier mics are microphones that attach to your clothing near the sternum. They are used when you want to clearly hear what a person is saying in a clip.
