What is News?

The definition of news is broad, but it can typically be referred to as current events and other important occurrences brought to the public in simple terms and explanations. News is presented in different ways across different platforms including print, radio, television, and online services. There is different news to be reported on every day because the state of the world is constantly evolving, and reporters and journalists must keep up with what is happening. News holds the important position of informing the public of what is going on in the world around them and doing so in a timely manner with accuracy. The object of the news is to help the public make informed decisions, so it has the power to shape public opinion although that is not the goal. News comes without bias, opinion, or political leanings. News is a critical component of democracy.

Before something becomes news, it must manifest into something obvious that can be proven. This means that news is not gossip or opinion. There are many public spaces for those kinds of things, there is even an opinion section in newspapers for topics like that. News doesn’t tell you what to think, but rather what to think about. News should be based off reliable sources of information and verified. The internet has no gate keeper, but the news does. People can say whatever they want to on the internet and information you obtain from TikTok, twitter, or your weird uncle on Facebook should be fact checked and not blindly believed because people do not always have the correct information or best intentions before posting.
